What Is Open in Sarajevo on Sunday?
Sarajevo does not shut down on Sunday. Normal retail is mostly closed, but restaurants and cafés can open, bakeries and petrol-station shops are useful backups, and several attractions still operate.
SHORT ANSWER
Plan sightseeing and eating normally — but buy supermarket groceries on Saturday.
The Sunday retail closure in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina affects ordinary shops, not the whole city. Your biggest Sunday limitation is shopping, not finding food or things to do.
SHOPPING
Are supermarkets and normal shops open?
Usually no. Sarajevo is in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where ordinary retail outlets are generally closed on Sundays. If you need a normal supermarket run, do it by Saturday evening.

FOOD
Can you eat out on Sunday?
Yes. The retail-closing rule does not mean restaurants and cafés must close. Sarajevo remains a good city for a Sunday meal or coffee, although individual businesses choose their own hours.
Do not use a shopping-centre retail schedule as proof that its restaurants or cinema are closed: different services can follow different hours.
GROCERIES
Where can you buy basics?
The Federation law lists useful retail exceptions, including bakeries and shops at petrol stations, bus and train stations, airports, hotels and certain cultural or religious sites. These are better Sunday backups than a normal supermarket.
If you arrive late on Sunday, buy only what you need for the first night and plan a normal supermarket stop on Monday.
ATTRACTIONS
What can you actually do on Sunday?
The Sarajevo Cable Car currently lists Sunday under its regular “other days” schedule, 09:00–19:00. Museum opening is mixed: several branches of the Museum of Sarajevo are closed on Sundays, while the Jewish Museum currently lists Sunday hours of 10:00–13:00.
Sunday therefore works well for Trebević, walking Baščaršija, cafés and selected attractions — but check the exact museum you want before crossing the city.
MUSEUM TRAP
Do not assume all Sarajevo museums share one schedule
Brusa Bezistan, Despić House, Svrzo House and the Museum of Sarajevo 1878–1918 currently list Sunday as closed. The Jewish Museum is the notable Sunday exception in the same museum network.
This is exactly why a generic “museums are open” or “museums are closed” answer is unreliable.
TRANSPORT
Does public transport run on Sunday?
Yes, Sarajevo still has public transport on Sundays, but frequencies and timetables can differ from weekdays. Check the operator and the current schedule for the specific route you need.
